The Australian Open marks the beginning of the Grand Slam each year, attracting the world's top tennis players to Melbourne, who compete in thrilling matches and demanding conditions to determine the first Major winner of the season.

The tournament was first called the Australasian Championships and first took place at the Warehouseman's Cricket Ground at Albert Park, Melbourne, in 1905. Rodney Heath emerged as the inaugural winner, defeating Albert Curtis 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 6–4 in the final.

In 1923, the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) officially recognised the Australasian Championship as a Major tournament alongside Wimbledon, the French Open, and the U.S. Open.

James Anderson was the first player to win three titles in 1922 and from 1924 to 1925 before the tournament was renamed the Australian Championships in 1927.

Roy Emmerson emerged as the best player in the 1960s, winning six titles and a record five consecutively from 1963 to 1967.

In 1969, the tournament's name changed for the final time to the Australian Open after including professional tennis players.

The various cities hosted tournaments, including Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, and Christchurch and Hastings in New Zealand before settling in Melbourne in 1972.

In 1987, the event was played on grass for the last time before switching to a hard court surface at Melbourne Park in 1988, where Mats Wilander secured his third Australian Open title and became the only player to win the tournament on both surfaces.

After Andre Agassi achieved his feat of winning four titles in 2003, two new superstars emerged as the kings down under, with Roger Federer winning the Australian Open six times and Novak Djokovic a record ten times, including three times in a row from 2011 to 2013 and 2019 to 2021.
