USA vs Panama Preview

Reigning champions USA are odds-on-favourites to reach yet another Gold Cup final. However, the hosts were fortunate to squeeze past Canada in the quarter-finals, and I expect them to face another tough battle here.

As such, Panama look to offer some value in the double chance market at over-even money odds. The Panamanians have shown plenty of attacking quality at these finals, and I also like the chances of BTTS at Snapdragon Stadium.

USA are unbeaten in their last 10 Gold Cup matches.
Panama have seen BTTS Yes in 6 of their last 7 Gold Cup matches.

Head to Head

Wednesday´s semi-final will be the 27th match between these nations. The USA leads the way with 18 victories and just 3 losses since their first contest back in 1964.

More recently, the Stars and Stripes have won five and lost one of their last 6 meetings since 2017.

Panama did claim a 1-0 WC qualifying victory in 2021; however, they suffered a heavy 5-1 loss in the return match in Orlando last year.

USA Form

USA have a dominant recent record in this competition with the Stars and Stripes lifting three of the last five Gold Cups since 2013.

USMNT have also won 18 of their last 20 GC games over the past six years.

However, USA have drawn two of four games at these finals and needed late equalisers in both regulation play and extra time to see off Canada via penalty shoot-out victory in the quarter-finals.

The US have no suspension or injury issues ahead of Wednesday´s semi-final. Still, head coach Callaghan may consider one or two alterations after a gruelling 120 minutes against the Canadians.

Despite his failure to score against Canada, Jesus Ferreira will lead the Stars and Stripes attack as he looks to add to his impressive six-goal Gold Cup tally.

Panama Form

Panama have been an excellent watch at these finals, with three wins from four games and 10 goals scored in total.

Beaten semi-finalists in 2011, Los Canaleros are aiming to reach their first-ever Gold Cup final.

Verdict

USA v Panama

The US boast a strong record against Panama, but this should prove a competitive and potentially entertaining semi-final where I expect both teams to score.

With home advantage, and a dominant history in this event, the US are well-justified favourites, but they may yet need extra time or penalties to reach their 4th successive Gold Cup final.
