Club chairman Thlopie Motsepe said the following to the assembled media:
"The Sundowns board and management have decided to implement a restructuring and change in the coaching department.
"This was by no means an easy decision. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi and coach Wendell Robinson were two coaches who have been with the club for 22 years combined.
"They have been incredible servants for the football club. Coach Romain Folz, who also joined us recently, was a very important player and part of this technical team. We needed another direction.”
Cardoso is the Chosen Man
Motsepe went on to announce 52-year-old Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso as Manqoba Mngqithi’s replacement:
“Allow me to introduce the man who will be leading that technical team… he is a man who we believe has the right type of personality to lead a club like Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, he has the ability and he has the desire to take us to the highest level and to succeed as a football club.
“Please allow me to welcome the new Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Mr Miguel Cardoso.”
