Serie A is Italy's premier football league, renowned for its distinctive defensive style of play, passionate fans, and featuring many of the greatest players of the modern era who have achieved top honours in European competitions by playing for some of the most iconic clubs in the world.

In 1898, the Italian Football Championship was founded, with teams from North and South of Italy competing for top honours. FBC Torinese, Genoa, Ginnastica Torino, and Internazionale Torino competed in the inaugural tournament.

Genoa emerged as the first-ever champions after defeating Internazionale Torino 2-1 after extra time in the final and would go on to win the following two editions, including in 1902, 1903, and 1904.

A unified league comprising 18 teams was formed after the regional divisions were scrapped for the 1929–30 season. Inter Milan (then known as Ambrosiana) won the inaugural Serie A by two points over Genoa.

During the 1930s, Juventus could make a name for themselves in Serie A, winning the title five consecutive times from 1931 to 1935.

The Serie A title did not leave the city of Turin for long, as Torino asserted themselves as the best team in Italy in the 1940s, clinching the Scudetto in 1943 and then four successive times from 1946 to 1949

AC Milan and Juventus battled during the 1950s and 1960s for supremacy in Italy, with each team winning Serie A on six occasions each before the team from Turin gained the upper hand with victories in 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, and 1978.

In 1984, Diego Maradona arrived in Napoli from Barcelona and would take the team from Naples to unprecedented heights, winning the Scudetto in 1987 and 1990.

AC Milan dominated Serie A in the 1990s, clinching five titles in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, and 1999.

Rivals Inter Milan became the best team in Italy during the latter half of the early 2000s, winning the Scudetto five times in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, which included the UEFA Champions League.

Juventus have been the premier team in Italy since, securing nine consecutive titles between 2012 and 2020, a Serie A record.

Silvio Piola has scored the most goals in Serie A, with 274 in 537 matches.

Three players jointly hold the record for most goals scored in a single season, with Gino Rossetti in 1928/29, Gonzalo Higuaín in 2015/16, and Ciro Immobile in 2019/20 all finding the back of the net 36 times.
