Mali vs Tunisia Preview

The last time these two met Mali won an ill tempered match 1-0 at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations. Both sides are known for their defensive solidity. I’m backing Mali to get over the line for a narrow win at home.

Head to Head

Mali hold a 3-2 lead against Tunisia in six previous matches along with one draw. They last met at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, a match Mali won 1-0.

Mali Form

Mali’s form has been superb and they are unbeaten in 90 minutes over their last 10 matches in all competitions. To get to this point of World Cup qualification, Mali topped their group, winning five and drawing one of their six matches.

Over those six qualification fixtures Mali did not concede a goal. Mali also reached the second round of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, beating Tunisia 1-0, Mauritania 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Gambia.

Mali’s last outing saw them knocked out of AFCON against Equatorial Guinea on penalties. The match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Mali Team News

Hamari Traore will miss this match due to his red card last time out. Issaka Samake should start at right-back.

The rest of the side should largely be the same as the one that played during the 2022 AFCON tournament.

Tunisia Form

Tunisia were quite fortunate during the 2022 AFCON tournament as they lost two and won one of their group matches. They qualified to the knockout stage as one of the best third place finishers.

From there Tunisia beat Nigeria 1-0 in the second round before going down 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the quarter-final.

During the group phase of World Cup qualification, Tunisia won four, drew one and lost one of their six games. They conceded just two goals during that campaign.

Tunisia Team News

Jalel Kadri has taken charge of the side after Mondher Kebaier was relieved of his duties post AFCON. Wahbi Khazri is suspended for this first leg clash.

Verdict

Mali have only conceded one goal in their last 10 matches and are unbeaten in this fixtures. I'm backing them to come out victorious and to win to nil.
