Australia vs England Women Preview

Australia are the only team to beat England in the last 28 months and the Matildas will be full of confidence after their quarter-final win over France.

England haven't been at their best throughout the tournament but have been getting the job done. I'm expecting this to follow suit and be a tight, low-scoring affair that can finish level after 90 minutes.

  • Australia are unbeaten in 17 of their last 21 matches
  • Australia have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches.
  • Australia are unbeaten in their last 2 matches against England.
  • England are unbeaten in 36 of their last 37 matches.
  • England have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches.

Head-to-Head

There is nothing to split these sides in five previous meetings with two wins each and one draw.

Australia won a friendly played in April as they ran out 2-0 winners to become the only team to beat England since April 2021.

Australia Women Form

Australia won a dramatic quarter-final against France on the 20th penalty kick of a see-sawing shootout on Saturday.

That game finished 0-0 with the Matildas twice missing match-winning penalties before Cortnee Vine slotted home the decisive spot kick.

It continued a dream run for the tournament hosts, who beat Republic of Ireland 1-0 and Canada 4-0 in the group stages and Denmark 2-0 in the round of 16.

Australia Women Injuries & News

Goalkeepers: Lydia Williams, Teagan Micah, Mackenzie Arnold
Defenders: Courtney Nevin, Aivi Luik, Claire Polkinghorne, Ellie Carpenter, Charlotte Grant, Clare Hunt, Steph Catley, Alanna Kennedy
Midfielders: Tameka Yallop, Katrina Gorry, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Clare Wheeler, Alex Chidiac, Emily van Egmond
Forwards: Cortnee Vine, Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso, Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord, Kyah Simon

Forward Sam Kerr was still not fit enough to start in the quarter-final, but could feature from the outset here.

England Women Form

England had to work hard once again to reach the semi-finals courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Colombia in the quarters.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have not yet really fired at the World Cup but have continued to find a way to progrees.

The Lionesses came through the group stages with wins over Haiti 1-0, Denmark 1-0 and China 6-1, before needing penalties to overcome Nigeria after a 0-0 draw in the round of 16.

England Women Injuries & News

Goalkeepers: Mary Earps, Ellie Roebuck, Hannah Hampton
Defenders: Lotte Wubben-Moy, Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan
Midfielders: Laura Coombs, Jordan Nobbs, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Katie Zelem
Forwards: Rachel Daly, Beth England, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Katie Robinson, Alessia Russo

Lauren James remains suspended so expect Ella Toone to feature in an unchanged side.

Verdict

Both sides have had their fair share of low-scoring games of late and I'm backing under 2.5 goals in this semi-final. With both difficult to beat, there is value on this ending all square after 90 minutes.
