The Desert Warriors reached this stage after four wins and two draws in six World Cup qualifying group matches. They went into the AFCON in January as favourites but were eliminated in the group stages.

After a poor 0-0 draw to against Sierra Leone to start the tournament, they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea. A 3-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the final group game confirmed their early exit.

Algeria won 1-0 away in Cameroon in the first leg last time out. Islam Slimani got the winner in the 40th minute from Youcef Belaili’s assist.

Coach Djamel Belmadi selected a back three for the first leg but could go to a back four at home. He has dropped experienced forward Baghdad Bounedjah and West Ham winger Said Benrahma from the squad.

Islam Slimani will play up front. Experienced midfielder Sofiane Feghouli is pushing for a recall after being benched in the last match.

Cameroon reached the AFCON semi-finals on home soil earlier this year before winning the third-place playoff. They won their final four matches in the World Cup qualification group to reach this stage.

The Indomitable Lions topped their AFCON group before beating Comoros 2-1 in the last 16 and Gambia 2-0 in the quarter-final. They were knocked by Egypt on penalties in the semi-final after a 0-0 draw but won the third-place playoff after a 3-3 draw with Burkina Faso.

Their last match saw a very disappointing start to the rein of new coach Rigobert Song. They lost 1-0 on home soil to Algeria in the first leg last week.

New coach Rigobert Song remains without key Frank Zambo Anguissa due to injury. Top striker Vincent Aboubakar was taken off at half-time on Thursday but should start this one.
