Poland vs Austria Predictions

Austria lost their opening game to France but equipped themselves very well. I fancy them to take the three points.

  • Austria have won 6 of their last 8 matches.
  • Austria have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 3 matches against Poland.
  • Austria have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches.

Head to Head

Poland have a 4-1 advantage against Austria with 2 draws in 7 matches.

They last met in September 2019, the game ending in a goalless draw.

Poland Form

Adam Buksa proved to be a worthy replacement for Robert Lewandowski, breaking the deadlock in Poland’s Euro 2024 opening match against Netherlands. They couldn’t hold Oranje though, losing the match 2-1 with Wout Weghorst scoring a late winner.

Poland had 0.98-1.50 expected goals, 35% possession and 11-20 shots in that match.

The Eagles struggled in the qualifiers, earning just 11 points from eight matches (three wins, two draws, and three defeats) in Group E, finishing behind the Czech Republic and Albania.

After that unsuccessful run, the Polish team punched their ticket to Germany through the UEFA Nations League playoffs. They began the playoffs with a convincing 5-1 victory in the semifinal against Estonia, Nicola Zalewski being the man of the match with three assists.

In the final, Michal Probierz’s side faced Wales in Cardiff, with both regular and extra-time ending without goals. Poland emerged victorious after a penalty shootout.

Poland Squad

Goalkeepers: Wojciech Szczęsny, Łukasz Skorupski, Marcin Bułka, Mateusz Kochalski
Defenders: Jan Bednarek, Bartosz Bereszyński, Jakub Kiwior, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Bartosz Salamon, Paweł Dawidowicz, Paweł Bochniewicz, Sebastian Walukiewicz
Midfielders: Kamil Grosicki, Piotr Zieliński, Przemysław Frankowski, Sebastian Szymański, Jakub Moder, Damian Szymański, Nicola Zalewski, Bartosz Slisz, Michał Skóraś, Jakub Piotrowski, Taras Romanczuk, Jakub Kałuziński, Kacper Urbański
Forwards: Robert Lewandowski (captain), Arkadiusz Milik, Karol Świderski, Krzysztof Piątek, Adam Buksa

Austria Form

Austria looked well-organized in their Euro 2024 opening match against one of the biggest title contenders France, missed a couple of great opportunities to score and lost the match 1-0, defender Max Wober scoring an own goal.

Das Team had 0.59-2.09 expected goals, 51% possession and 7-14 shots against Les Bleus.

Ralf Rangnick’s side qualified for Euro 2024 directly as 2nd placed team in Group F. They had 19 points from eight matches, ending one point behind Belgium, ahead of Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia.

Austria’s last two test games ahead of Euro 2024 were a success, beating Serbia 2-1 in front of the home crowd, followed by a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in St Gallen.

Austria Squad

Goalkeepers: Heinz Lindner, Patrick Pentz, Niklas Hedl, Tobias Lawal
Defenders: Stefan Lainer, Stefan Posch, Maximilian Wöber, Philipp Lienhart, Kevin Danso, Phillipp Mwene, Gernot Trauner, Flavius Daniliuc, Leopold Querfeld
Midfielders: Marcel Sabitzer, Florian Grillitsch, Christoph Baumgartner, Konrad Laimer ,Florian Kainz, Nicolas Seiwald, Romano Schmid, Alexander Prass, Matthias Seidl, Thierno Ballo
Forwards: Marko Arnautovic, Michael Gregoritsch, Patrick Wimmer, Marco Grull, Maximilian Entrup

Verdict

Austria’s run in the qualifiers was impressive, losing just one of their last 16 games ahead of Euro. Poland barely made it to Germany so I am predicting Das Team to claim three important points on Friday.
