The CAF Confederation Cup runs alongside the CAF Champions League each season as the continent's secondary club football competition, offering teams a chance to compete internationally.

The Africa Cup Winners Cup, formed in 1975 and the CAF Cup, created in 1992, merged to become the CAF Confederation Cup in 2004, a club competition one tier below the CAF Champions League.

The two dominant clubs from the former competitions were Al Ahly, with four Africa Cup Winners Cups, and JS Kabylie, with three CAF Cups.

Two Ghanaian teams contested the inaugural CAF Confederation Cup final, with Hearts of Oak defeating Asante Kotoko 8-7 on penalties after the score had ended 2-2 over two legs.

Four teams have since gone on to win the CAF Confederation Cup on debut, including Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) in 2006, CS Sfaxien (Tunisia) in 2007, Stade Malien (Mali) in 2009, and FUS Rabat (Morocco) in 2010.

Teams can qualify for the competition based on their performances in their domestic league and cup competitions from the previous season.

The CAF Confederation Cup consists of two phases for teams to advance to the knockout rounds.

The qualification phase consists of teams playing two preliminary rounds to see who progresses to the main draw of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The sixteen winning teams from the preliminary rounds are divided into four groups of four. Each team plays against the other three opponents in their group in round-robin matches, with three points awarded for a win and one for a draw.

The Group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout rounds (quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals), played over two legs home and away, with the away goals rule in effect to determine the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The winners of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup face each other in the CAF Super Cup the following season.

Notable records achieved by teams and individuals at the CAF Confederation Cup since its inception:

SuperSport United (South Africa) and Raja Casablanca (Morocco) jointly hold the record for scoring the most goals in a season, 34.

Algerian Abdelmalek Ziaya holds the title of top goalscorer in a single season in the competition, with 15 goals in 2009.
