The Algerian Ligue 1 is the top division in the land, where home advantage plays a huge role in deciding who will be champion each season due to the intimidating atmosphere visiting sides must regularly endure.
When Algeria gained independence from France in 1962, the Algerian Football Federation was founded, and soon after, the first national football championship was established.
For the league's first season, three regional leagues were formed: the Ligue d'Alger, Ligue d'Oran, and Ligue de Constantine.
USM Alger and MC Alger progressed to the semi-finals after finishing first and second in Ligue d'Alger, whilst SCM Oran clinched the top spot in Ligue d'Oran, and USM Annaba won Ligue de Constantine.
USM Alger defeated USM Annaba to reach the final before MC Alger thrashed SCM Oran in the other semi-final.
In June 1963, Stade d'El Anasser in Algiers was the venue for the final of the Championnat National 1, with USM Alger comfortably beating MC Alger 3-0 to win the inaugural championship.
The 1964/65 season saw the regional divisions abandoned to create a unified league featuring sixteen of the best teams in the land, with CR Belcourt (later CR Belouzidad) emerging as champions.
CR Belouzidad became the first club to dominate the league, winning four titles from 1965 to 1970, which included two back-to-back championships in 1965 and 1966 and 1968 and 1970.
The 1970s saw two teams battle for top honours each season, with MC Alger winning five titles and JS Kabylie securing four.
JS Kabylie continued to win titles in the 1980s, adding another six to their growing record.
The first decade in the 2000s saw three teams taking turns to win the league, with CR Belouzidad securing two, JS Kabylie three, and USM Alger three titles.
In August 2010, the Algerian Football Federation renamed the national championship to the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
CR Belouzidad became the first club to win three consecutive Algerian Ligue 1 titles from 2020 to 2022.
In its current format, the Algerian Ligue 1 comprises 16 teams, playing each other twice during the season, with three points for a win and a point for a draw.
The winner and runner-up of the Algerian Ligue 1 compete in the CAF Champions League at the start of the following season, while the third and fourth-placed teams qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.
The teams that finish in the bottom two positions in the standings are relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the season. The top two sides that earned promotion will play in the Algerian Ligue 1.
Hacene Lalmas is often mentioned as the leading all-time scorer in the Algerian Ligue 1 with 153 goals; however, 56 of his total is from when he played in one of the regional leagues.
However, Tarek Hadj Adlane is the top marksman, with 125 goals in 305 matches from 1987 to 2002.
