On 10 August 2022 CAF President Patrice Motsepe and FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the launch of a African Super League. There will be a total of $100-million up for grabs with the winners taking home $11.6-million.
Each team will receive an initial fee of $2.5-million to assist in logistical costs. The tournament is expected to start in August 2023.
The African Super League will consist of 24 teams from 16 countries across the African continent. The prize money on offer is significantly higher than that of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup.
While many have likened this to the infamous European Super League touted in 2020, the African version is different in key areas. The league will have promotion and relegation, which was one of the biggest complaints for the European version.
According to Motsepe, this will allow help African clubs retain some of their star players who often seek bigger pay days in European leagues.
