The competition consists of the following seven teams:

Varsity Shield History
The Varsity Shield was introduced in 2011 and runs concurrently with the more prestigious, Varsity Cup. The Varsity Shield champions have an opportunity to be promoted to the Varsity Cup.
The Varsity Shield was introduced in order to expand the reach of rugby to other Universities and allow a larger base of players to develop. The Universities that have participated have larger student volumes and has resulted in the game of rugby being expanded.
Varsity Shield Previous Winners
There is no 2020 champion as yet because of the postponement due to COVID-19.
FNB CUT (Central University of Technology) have won the tournament the most times in its history with three wins.
