Varsity Cup History
The first edition of the Varsity Cup was held in 2008 and won by Maties. It was created in order to bring a sense of professionalism to the game of rugby at university level. This fierce competition has since produced many professional players, including the likes of Eben Etzebeth, Handre Pollard, Malcolm Marx, Aphiwe Dyantyi, and Trevor Nyakane.
In 2011, the Varsity Shield was launched, which introduced promotion and relegation into the Varsity Cup format. This involves the winner of the Shield taking on the bottom-placed side in the Cup in a play-off, with the prize being a spot in the following season’s Varsity Cup.
Maties are the competition’s most successful side, having won the title 5 times. They have also reached 9 finals in total, making them the team to beat each year. Five different sides have lifted the trophy in the competition’s 12-year history.
