Reds vs Chiefs Predictions

The Chiefs are favourites in Queensland this weekend, but the Reds are a bit of a bogey team for them. While they win more often than lose, the last five fixtures have seen the winning team win by less than 10 points. That said, the Reds have also played some good rugby in the opening two rounds.

I am backing the Reds to get inside 10 points and perhaps upset the odds with a win.

  • Reds have won just 2 of their last 19 matches against New Zealand opposition.
  • Chiefs have won their last 2 matches.
  • Chiefs have won 3 of their last 5 matches against the Reds.
  • Chiefs have won 8 of their last 9 away matches.

Head to Head

Chiefs have won three of their last five games. None of the five fixtures have been decided by more than 10 points.

Reds Form

The Reds have looked quite good in the first two rounds of Super Rugby. There has been enough about them to show that they should surprise a few sides this season.

Against the Waratahs in round one, the Reds were clinical in winning 40-22 at home. Round two was a far bigger challenge as they went up against the Hurricanes in Melbourne.

For the full 80 minutes the Reds held their own against the Canes, just coming up short in a superb match. The 38-33 defeat will hut but the signs remain promising, and the losing bonus point will help as well.

Subs: Josh Nasser, Peni Ravai, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Cormac Daly, John Bryant, Kalani Thomas, Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, Tim Ryan

Chiefs Form

The Chiefs have made a superb start to the 2024 Super Rugby season with two wins in their first two games. In round one, the runners-up from 2023 defeated the Crusaders 33-29 on home soil.

Last week I expected more from the Brumbies in Melbourne, but the Chiefs ran rampant, winning 46-12. It was a very dominant performance and the kind that sends warning signs to all others hoping to challenge this season.

Verdict

I am backing the Reds to get within 10 points of the Chiefs with an upset win possible.
