The Six Nations Championship is the premier Northern Hemisphere rugby tournament in the world, bringing together the best players from six countries who battle annually to see which nation can win the coveted Grand Slam.

In 1883, the first contested Home Nations Championship was between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, with England emerging as the inaugural champions.

In 1910, France officially joined the competition, forming the Five Nations Championship, with England securing the title.

From 1932 to 1939, the competition reverted to the Home Nations Championship format after the exclusion of France from the tournament. After the conclusion of World War II, the Five Nations Championship resumed when France rejoined the fold.

From 1994, teams no longer shared the Five Nations Championship if they finished on equal points after the introduction of points difference between the teams.

The last winner of the Five Nations was Scotland in 1999, their fifth overall, before Italy joined the fold at the start of the 21st century, and the competition was renamed the Six Nations Championship.

Since then, Scotland have gone winless in the competition, whilst Italy have finished last in the table on 18 occasions.

Each year, every nation aims to become the Grand Slam champion in the Six Nations, achieved when one team defeats all the other sides during the competition. Only on 13 occasions has this happened, with France and Wales winning four Grand Slams, Ireland three, and England two.

France became the first team to achieve the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2002, winning it again in 2004, 2010, and 2022.

Wales have also secured four Grand Slam campaigns in 2005, 2008, 2012, and 2019.

Ireland was the last team to register a Grand Slam in 2023, with their other two triumphs coming in 2009 and 2018.

England had to wait 13 years between their two Grand Slam achievements, recording their first in 2003 and second in 2016.

Notable records achieved by individuals at all Six Nations Championships since its inception:

Johnny Sexton (Ireland) holds the record for the most points scored by an individual, with 566 during his Six Nations career.

Brian O'Driscoll (Ireland) has the record for the most Six Nations tries with 26 total.
