The 2023 Rugby World Cup is upon us as the excitement builds throughout the rugby community. This year promises to be the best yet with a number of possible nations vying for the Webb Ellis Trophy.

Over the previous nine editions of the tournament, we have seen some sublime team performances and excellent individual ones. Today we take a look at the odds for the top try scorer at the tournament.

Currently, the most tries scored at a Rugby World Cup is shared between New Zealand’s legendary Jonah Lomu and Julian Savea, while South Africa’s Bryan Habana matched the feat of eight tries back in 2007.

None of the above feature in the 2023 edition of the World Cup so can some match or even break the record of eight tries? It will take some doing and as often is the case, much depends on whether a team progresses deep into the tournament, and how many games they play, especially against the minnow sides.

Below we take a look at the odds from 10bet

Will Jordan (8.00)

Will Jordan is equally competent at fullback and wing but he has been devasting this year on the field of play, regardless of position. If New Zealand reach the semi-final of the 2023 Rugby World Cup I’d be very surprised if he isn’t right up there.

Jordan averages just about a try per game for the All Blacks. He will certainly start against France and most likely Italy. But the question is whether he will feature against Uruguay and Namibia where he can really get himself a head start.

Damian Penaud (8.50)

At the end of the 2023 Six Nations, Damian Penaud had notched up 23 tries in international rugby for France. He crossed the line again during the recent warm-up games.

Penaud will have plenty opportunity if he remains fit. The winger has turned into a try scoring machine in recent years and is widely considered to be the best finisher there is in world rugby.

Much again depends on how much he plays against weaker opposition, but regardless, all the big names will be rested against minnows. Penaud offers great value at 8.50 given that this is France’s home World Cup and they haven’t lost at home in 13 games.

Mark Telea (8.50)

Mark Telea has almost certainly nailed down a spot as a first-choice winger in the All Blacks side. Given the talent they possess in that area, Telea has been exceptionally in keeping others at bay.

The issue with Telea is he is competing with Will Jordan, not for position, but for tries. However, should Telea get an opportunity against Namibia and/or Uruguay, he could notch up a few tries in a matter of minutes.

Caleb Clarke (12.00)

Caleb Clarke

This is an interesting option for me. I don’t feel Clarke starts in the All Blacks biggest games as I expect Jordan and Telea to be on the wingers with Beauden Barrett at fullback. But that isn’t a negative in that sense.

It means that should that be the case; Clarke is very likely to start against the minnows and step into big games off the bench or if injuries occur.

If Clarke isn’t first-choice and starts against Uruguay and Namibia, the big winger is quite capable of scoring a fair chunk of tries.

Cheslin Kolbe (12.00)

Cheslin Kolbe broke onto the scene in 2018 with South Africa and had an excellent Rugby World Cup in 2019. Unfortunately, he did suffer an injury which resulted in him missing key games.

Kolbe is more than capable, one of the best in the world, and not many will forget his superb effort in the 2019 RWC final. There is much debate over the wing positions for the Springboks, but Kolbe is probably the one sure choice.

However, even if the Springboks go deep or even defend their title, I am not sure Kolbe will be that prolific. He may prove me wrong but at 12.00 he does offer some good value.
