Wales vs South Africa Preview

With 11 successive losses, Wales now face the double world champions. The hosts are very low on confidence and despite the changes South Africa have made, the visitors should cruise to victory.

  • South Africa have won 6 of their last 7 matches against Wales.
  • South Africa have covered the -26 handicap in their last 2 matches against Wales.

Head to Head

South Africa have won six of their last seven matches against Wales. The last three matches ended up with 16-, 36-, and 28-point winning margins for the Springboks.

Wales Form

Wales are in their worst run in rugby union history. They have lost their last 11 matches with their last victory coming against Georgia at the Rugby World Cup. Wales lost all five 2024 Six Nations fixtures.

There seemed to be some hope for Wales in their July tour to Australia when they lost both tests but by margins of nine and eight points. However, this Autumn things have not gone according to plan either.

A fortnight ago, Wales suffered a 24-19 defeat to Fiji at home before going down 52-20 to Australia last weekend. It is hard to see them ending this year on a high against the world champions.

Wales Injuries & Team News

Under fire coach, Warren Gatland has made five changes to his side. The most notable being Sam Costelow at flyhalf. Adam Beard misses the game through injury which sees Christ Tshiunza come in at lock.

South Africa Form

South Africa have won nine of their 11 matches in 2024, and they will want to end with 10 from 12. The only two defeats – to Ireland and Argentina – came by one-point margins.

The Springboks have already Wales this year, thrashing them 41-13 at Twickenham in June. South Africa have certainly not looked invincible in their first two Autumn Nations Series matches, yet they have won both games rather comfortably.

Against Scotland, the Boks won 32-15 in a game Scotland could easily have led with 20 minutes to play. Last week, England looked for large parts to have the upper hand, but South Africa’s quality and pressure came through in the final 20 minutes to secure a 29-20 win.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

Rassie Erasmus has once again made plenty of changes to the side as he continues to build squad depth for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse brothers start at half-back for South Africa. The rest of the backline remains the same.

Verdict

Wales can get within the 26-handicap, but they are unlikely to challenge for the result.
