Wales vs South Africa Preview & Tips

Wales have a good record against South Africa at home. The Springboks do arrive as favourites but the contest should be very close. I’m backing Wales to get within nine points of their visitors.

  • Wales have won their last 4 matches at home against South Africa.
  • Wales have won 5 of their last 7 matches against South Africa.
  • Wales are the 2021 Six Nations champions.
  • South Africa have lost 3 of their last 4 matches.

Head to Head

Wales have won five of their last seven matches against South Africa. It was however South Africa who won the last time they met at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In a tight semi-final battle, the Springboks won 19-16.

South Africa have not won in Wales in their last four visits though.

Wales Form

Wales are the 2021 Six Nations champions after winning four of their five matches in the competition. That came after a very disappointing 2020 campaign.

The Welsh played two mid-year Test matches without their British & Irish Lions players and struggled. They drew the first test 20-20 against Argentina but lost the second one 33-11.

Last week Wales again got hammered, this time against New Zealand. They lost 54-16 at the Principality Stadium. It must however be noted that Wales were without about 15 players due to it being outside of the international window.

Wales Team News

Captain, Alun Wyn Jones has been ruled out for a few months and Ross Moriarty is also out injured.

Wayne Pivac’s has made a number of changes with other players available in the international window. Louis Rees-Zammit comes in on the wing with Dan Biggar back at flyhalf.

Liam Williams starts on the bench.

South Africa Form

South Africa have not had a consistent season but their form coming to Europe has been reasonably good. After winning the British & Irish Lions series 2-1, the Springboks beat Argentina twice.

They then surprisingly lost twice to Australia which put a huge dent in the world champions confidence. There was improvement thereafter as South Africa lost 19-17 to New Zealand.

Jaques Nienaber’s side then beat the All Blacks the following week 31-29. Both matches were decided by last minute penalties.

South Africa Team News

Damian Willemse has replaced regular fullback Willie le Roux. Jesse Kriel comes in on the wing as a replacement for Sbu Nkosi who has yet to get his visa to travel.
