Ireland vs New Zealand Preview

This is a repeat of the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-final, a match New Zealand won against the odds. Ireland will want to avenge that defeat and with many words spoken in the weeks leading up to it, there is plenty of pride at stake.

Head to Head

Ireland Form

Ireland are ranked top of the World Rankings and will be looking to cement their place in the coming month. This Friday offers them a great opportunity to defeat the third-placed New Zealand.

Bigger things will, however, be on the Irish minds. During the 2023 Rugby World Cup, New Zealand, against all the odds, knocked Ireland out of the tournament in the quarter-final. It was a heated match and much has been said about it since, particularly the Irish.

That disappointment was quickly put away as Ireland retained their Six Nations crown. Their only defeat came against England.

In July, Ireland toured South Africa in a much anticipated tour. After losing the first Test comfortably, Ireland bounced back to win the second with a last-minute drop goal to square the series.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand have been a tad inconsistent this season, much like 2023, but they did manage to reach the final of the Rugby World Cup.

This year, New Zealand beat England 2-0 in a home series before seeing off Fiji with relative ease. Despite some very average performances, the All Blacks managed a second-place finish in the 2024 Rugby Championship.

A home defeat to Argentina and two losses in South Africa put plenty of pressure on the All Blacks heading to Europe. However, a comfortable win over Japan a fortnight ago was followed by a tight 24-22 victory over England at Twickenham last Saturday.

It was a game New Zealand were fortunate to win, but over the 80 minutes, they probably deserved it on the balance of play. Another poor final quarter almost cost them in the end. They will need to be much better to beat Ireland who are out for revenge.

Verdict

Ireland very seldom loses at the Aviva Stadium and have a good recent record against the All Blacks. I'm backing the hosts to cover the -10 handicap in this one.
