New Zealand vs Argentina Preview
Argentina will be looking to go back-to-back against New Zealand away from home. They were superb last week, and although the hosts will want to bounce back, Los Pumas have the quality to push them for 80 minutes.
- New Zealand have won 6 of their last 8 matches against Argentina.
- New Zealand have won 3 of their 4 matches in 2024.
- Argentina have won 3 of their last 4 matches.
- Argentina beat New Zealand by 8 points last weekend.
Head to Head
All Blacks have won six of their last eight against Los Pumas. However, last Saturday it was Argentina who came out on top 38-30.
New Zealand Form
Going into last week’s Rugby Championship opener in Wellington, New Zealand were heavy favourites to defeat Los Pumas. While they weren’t at their best earlier in the season against England, New Zealand showed enough that allowed us to believe they were on the right path.
However, last weekend showed just how far Argentina have come as a rugby nation over the last decade. More so, perhaps, how far the All Blacks have drifted with that aura they used to carry at home very much gone.
The All Blacks made a strong start but allowed the visitors back into the game with some very uncharacteristic errors. In the end, the curse of Wellington continued with Los Pumas winning 38-30.
New Zealand Injuries & Team News
Scott Robertson is sure to make changes to his side this week. Damian McKenzie has come in for plenty of criticism for his performances at flyhalf this season, however, it will be interesting if Robertson sticks with his man.
Argentina Form
Argentina will be over the moon with the result last weekend against New Zealand. The 38-30 victory has put them in a strong position in the Rugby Championship.
The question, however, remains, can they back it up? Argentina have a history of putting in big performances before falling completely flat the following weekend.
Los Pumas will know; another positive result puts them on a very favourable path towards the Rugby Championship title. They still have to face South Africa, but one upset win there could be enough.
While Argentina have a history of failing to back up big performances, they will be cognizant of the fact that this isn’t the incredible All Blacks side of the past.
Argentina Injuries & Team News
Last week was a very physical encounter and will have taken a lot out of the players. I’d be surprised if there aren’t a few changes at least.
Verdict
I am backing Argentina to get within the 14-point handicap after their win last week. There may be value in backing another upset as well.
