The English Premiership Rugby is one of the most prestigious rugby leagues in the world, featuring elite players who compete annually at a high level of competition to determine the premier team in England.

The English Premiership Rugby was first known as the Courage League National Division One from 1987 to 1997. Over the years, it has been called the Allied Dunbar Premiership (1997 to 2000), the Zurich Premiership (2000 to 2005), the Guinness Premiership (2005 to 2010), the Aviva Premiership (2010 to 2008), and is currently named the Gallagher Premiership Rugby.

The 12 teams that participated in the inaugural English Premiership Rugby season included Bath, Bristol, Coventry, Gloucester, Harlequins, Leicester, Moseley, Nottingham, Orrell, Sale, Wasps, and Waterloo, with Leicester emerging as the first champions of the league after finishing top of the standings.

Bath became the first team to dominate the Premiership, securing six titles from 1989 to 1996 before the Leicester Tigers won five from 1995 to 2002.

A title decider was introduced to the league for the first time in the 2002/03 season, with London Wasps thrashing Gloucester 39-3 in the final. They would go on to win another three titles in five years.

Saracens and Exeter had an almighty tussle to become the dominant team in England from 2016 to 2019, playing three finals in four years, with the former winning on each occasion.

In its current format, ten teams will play each other home and away during the regular season, with the top four teams in the standings at the end of the round-robin fixtures entering the knockout stages.

The teams that finished first and fourth contest the first semi-final, whilst the sides that placed second and third face off in the second semi-final to determine which teams meet in the final.

A win earns a team four points, a draw two points and a bonus point is awarded for scoring four or more tries or for losing a match by seven points or less.

Teams that finish within the top eight positions in the English Premiership league qualify to play in the Investec European Champions Cup the following season. The bottom two sides will play in the European Challenge Cup.
