Zebre vs Cheetahs Preview

While the Cheetahs have a fairly strong side, they don’t play enough rugby to retain match fitness. This could cost them dearly in a game they would normally fancy winning.

I’m backing the hosts to win but the Cheetahs to get inside 10 points.

  • Zebre have lost 5 of their last 7 matches.
  • Zebre beat the Cheetahs 41-13 in their last encounter.
  • Cheetahs have not played competitive rugby in at least 2 months.
  • Cheetahs are not part of any competition besides the Currie Cup.

Head to Head

Zebre thrashed the Cheetahs 41-13 at home in their last match in 2020.

Zebre Form

Zebre have been good in the URC this season despite only winning one game to date. It was their first win in almost two seasons.

As perennial bottom feeders in the URC, not much is expected of the Italian outfit, but they will see this as a chance to get a result on home soil.

The Italian side lost their last two games to the Lions and Stormers heavily in South Africa. But they have drawn against Cardiff and beaten the Sharks this season.

Zebre Injuries & Team News

Zebre will be keen on getting a positive result even if it is just to give them a boost of confidence in the URC.

Cheetahs Form

The Cheetahs are a strange case and could well struggle in the Challenge Cup. That was expected last season, but they still managed to make the playoffs despite not playing any other rugby.

The Free State outfit used to be part of the Pro14, now URC, but were removed in favour of other South African franchises post-COVID. Make no mistake, the Cheetahs have a strong side, but they don’t play near enough rugby.

The Cheetahs are the current Currie Cup champions in South Africa. They also beat the Western Force home and away a few months ago.

Cheetahs Injuries & Team News

Hawies Fourie has free reign on who to select with the lack of rugby. Game time will be crucial for the Cheetahs though as they clearly lack that.

Verdict

Zebre are backed to win by less than 10 points.
