Lions vs Western Province Preview
The Lions are second on the table having lost just one fixture in six. Province on the other hand have just two victories, both of which came against bottom of the table, Griffons. I'm backing the Lions to cover the 11-point spread.
- Lions have won 5 of their last 6 matches.
- Lions beat Western Province by 20 points in their last encounter.
- Western Province have lost 4 of their last 6 matches.
Head to Head
Lions won this fixture by 20 points last season.
Lions Form
The Lions are currently second on the Currie Cup table with five wins from their six matches. They lost one game.
The Lions began the season with three victories over the Sharks and Pumas away before seeing off Griquas at home. Despite that strong start, the Johannesburg-based outfit somehow conspired to lose at home to the Sharks in round four.
They have, however, bounced back well, beating the Griquas away and Pumas at home last week.
Lions Injuries & Team News
There should be some changes to the Lions side, but they will still field close to their strongest team.
Western Province Form
Western Province are struggling down in sixth place with just 14 points from six games. They have won two and lost four of their fixtures.
Province, the most successful side in Currie Cup history, lost their first two games of the season before thrashing the Griffons away. They then lost to the Bulls in Pretoria before winning again against the Griffons, this time on home soil.
Last week, Western Province made a strong start at home against the Cheetahs. The game was played in very wet conditions and the hosts took advantage of it.
However, in the second half the Cheetahs’ superiority came through to win the game 26-19.
Western Province Injuries & Team News
Western Province will be pleased with most of their performance last week, but this week is a new challenge. I expect John Dobson to make a few changes with Springbok Steven Kitshoff set to make his comeback from injury.
Verdict
Lions are tipped to cover the -11 handicap in this Currie Cup fixture against Western Province at home.
