Head to Head
The series is level at 1-1 after South Africa won the 2nd Test 27-9 at the Cape Town Stadium. The 1st Test went in favour of the British & Irish Lions 22-17.
South Africa Form
South Africa certainly seemed to find their groove in the 2nd Test last weekend. They won the match 27-9 at the Cape Town Stadium to level the series 1-1 against the B+I Lions.
The Springboks were under huge pressure coming into the 2nd Test after suffering a 22-17 defeat in the first match against the tourists. That was followed by a week of controversy where Rassie Erasmus created a video depicting the refereeing decisions.
At half-time on Saturday it all looked good for the Lions. They led 9-6 but South Africa dominated the set piece battle in the second half, and in so doing territory. With the series on a knife edge, Saturday’s decider promises to be another thriller.
South Africa Team News
The Springboks have been forced into a couple changes. In the backline Cobus Reinach starts at scrumhalf with Faf de Klerk injured.
Lood de Jager starts at lock with Franco Mostert shifting to flank for the injured Pieter-Steph du Toit.
British & Irish Lions Form
The British & Irish Lions will be ruing their second half showing in the 2nd Test against South Africa. It was a complete reversal of the 1st Test where South Africa led at the break but the Lions were dominant in the second half.
The 27-9 defeat looks like a comfortable victory for the hosts but until the 60th minute there was only two points in it. Had Dan Biggar converted a penalty the Lions would have regained the lead after leading 9-6 at half time.
Warren Gatland’s side will be up for this match and hope to put in an 80 minute performance. Both sides have been good for 40 minutes in the previous two Test matches, but they’ll need better this time around.
British & Irish Lions Team News
Gatland has made six changes to the side that lost to South Africa in the 2nd Test.
Welsh duo Liam Williams and Josh Adams come into the back three while Ireland’s Bundee Aki starts at inside centre. Ali Price starts at scrumhalf ahead of Conor Murray.
In the forward pack there is a return from injury for Wyn Jones who starts at prop. Ken Owens comes in at hooker.
