2023 British Grand Prix Tips

The Formula 1 teams move onto Silverstone for the second of four Grands Prix in July. It is of course the home race for Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and also McLaren’s Lando Norris, who had his best performance of the year last weekend in Austria, crossing the line 4th.

All drivers and teams will be looking to put all of the ‘track limits’ controversy from the Red Bull Ring behind them and fight it out on the track with breathtaking passing manoeuvres instead of time penalties.

The British GP is always one of the biggest spectacles of the F1 year and the 2022 race certainly had everyone on the edge of their seat. Last year’s race was filled with excitement right from the first of two green lights, with Zhou Guanyu flipping his Alfa Romeo onto its halo and ending up over the safety barrier.

The racing after the restart was cutthroat with countless overtakes between the top 6 drivers as they all eventually finished just 11 seconds apart. In the end, it was Carlos Sainz who took his first-ever F1 victory, in front of Sergio Perez and hometown hero Hamilton.

There is finally a little spice to an F1 race, with championship leader Max Verstappen, who has won the last five races of 2023, coming to a track where he has never won. The reigning champion has never taken the chequered flag in seven attempts at the British GP and although he started from second on the grid in 2022, he succumbed to rear-wing damage and finished seventh.

British GP Qualifying Best Bet

Max Verstappen has taken pole position in the last four races, but has never taken pole at Silverstone, qualifying second the last two years is the closest he has come to the first spot on the grid.

Charles Leclerc came within 0.048s of Max Verstappen’s pole position time in Austria, which is Red Bull’s home circuit and a track that the Dutchman is very familiar with. In 2022, Silverstone proved to be a kind track for the Ferrari, especially in qualifying with Sainz taking pole and Leclerc coming in third.

I like the value at 7.50 for Charles Leclerc to take pole position, backing up Ferrari's qualifying results of 2022. Leclerc is the only other driver to take a pole position, besides a Red Bull this year and he has a good shot to take his place at the front of the grid for the second time in 2023, like he did in Azerbaijan.

British GP Best Bet

Although Max Verstappen and Red Bull have never won in Britain, in 2023 you cannot bet against them. If it wasn't for an early collision in 2022 for the world champion the whole race could have turned out very differently with the Red Bull showing great race pace all weekend.

After Austria, it looks like Sergio Perez’s fortunes have turned around again so a double podium for the Austrian team looks inevitable.

There is also okay value out there for both Ferraris to place in the top 6. Ferrari have shown good race pace the last two weekends and we can expect them to put up a similar performance at Silverstone as they did in 2022 and 2021, with both cars finishing top 6.

Verdict

Silverstone will be action packed and the battle between Red Bull and Ferrari will reignite again. You can’t bet against Verstappen until proven otherwise and this weekend his teammate Sergio Perez will join him on the Podium.

The Ferraris will put up a fight with Charles Leclerc taking pole which will help ensure that both of the Italian manufactured cars finish in the top 6.
