The Hollywoodbets Durban July is by some distance the biggest horse race in South Africa and one of the more popular ones globally, too.

A massive stakes purse of R5 million will be up for grabs at Greyville when the best horses in town convene on the first Saturday of July.

2024 Durban July Entries

The new favourite for this year's Durban July is Green With Envy. Dean Kannemeyer's star three-year-old will be looking to land a five-timer when he returns to Greyville in July, having registered back-to-back Grade One wins in the WSB Guineas and the Daily News 2000 this month.

Fellow three-year-old Flag Man shot up the Durban July betting after losing out to Green With Envy by a short-head in the Daily News. Last year's runner-up, See It Again has slipped to second in the market, and will be looking to get his season back on-track in Saturday's Gold Challenge.

Defending champion, Winchester Mansion is a general 10/1 shot to retain his crown, having bounced back to form with a good run in the recent Champions Challenge. Nathan Kotzen could also be represented by Royal Victory, who beat Winchester Mansion in the Champions Challenge, having already landed the Summer Cup this season.

Lucky Lad has been well-backed for the July after two recent victories, despite those top-level wins coming over sprinting distances. Sandringham Summit will renew rivalries with Green With Envy, having been beaten a neck by the favourite in the recent WSB Guineas.

Main Defender will take on See It Again, Lucky Lad and Sandringham Summit in Saturday's Gold Challenge. Rupert Wine Premier Trophy winner, Mucho Dinero and SA Derby winner, Purple Pitcher feature in the field. Other possible runners in this year's Durban July include old favourites Safe Passage, Counsin Casey, Aragosta and Without Question.
