Durban July History

The Durban July spans three centuries, having first been run in 1897. The race was sponsored by Rothmans from 1963 until 2000 with Vodacom taking over the sponsorship in 2002.

Every year the running of the country's premier race for thoroughbreds sees Greyville bursting at the seams with celebrities, socialites and bejewelled followers of fashion.

It's a unique occasion and the greatest horseracing event on the continent. And it sparks the biggest betting spree of the year in South Africa with over R100 million being bet on the tote and even more with fixed-odds operators.

The race had humble beginnings back in 1897 when it attracted just seven runners and was contested over 1 mile (1600m) for a stake of 500 sovereigns.

Vodacom sponsored the race for the first time in 2002, when trainer Mike de Kock’s charge Ipi Tombe scored a famous victory.

She went onto greater fame in March the following year when she captured the Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup night at Nad Al Sheba.
