The first big race to take place during the new flat season in South Africa is the Guateng Summer Cup. Now named the Betway Summer Cup, this lucrative handicap has been won by many of South African racing's finest flat racers down the years and a first prize of R2.25m will be up for grabs this weekend.

It's been 11 years since Mike De Kock last lifted the Summer Cup. South Africa's top trainer will play an extremely strong hand this year, with reigning Durban July winner, Sparkling Water currently topping the betting with Betway.

The next two names in the betting are also trained by De Kock, with Safe Passage and Aragosta sitting just behind their stablemate. Janse van Vuuren's Puerto Manzano is the only other runners sitting at a price of 10/1 or shorter.

Sean Tarry, who's won four of the last five renewals of the Summer Cup, could be represented by Litigation, Nebraas, Zillzaal and Shango. Corne Spies has entered up William Robertson, with Joe Soma set to run Red Saxon.

Other notable runners include Second Base, who'll be ridden by Gavin Lerena, Juan Paul van der Merwe will ride outsider Astrix, with Randall Simons getting the leg-up on Mike Do Kock's fourth runner, Mk's Pride.

Going into this year's Summer Cup, all the talk has surrounded Mike De Kock. De Kock needs one more victory to reach a decade of victories in this valuable handicap. Big Mike is also an ambassador for Betway, who sponsor this race for the first time, and De Kock has been extremely complimentary of this betting firm for the money and dedication they've put into grassroots South African racing.

De Kock is desperate to lift the Summer Cup for the tenth time and he clearly plays the strongest hand. Durban July winner, Sparkling Water is sure to come on for that return to action in the Victory Moon. For me, though, the one to beat is Muzi Yeni's mount, SAFE PASSAGE.

Having stayed on well to finish third behind his stablemate in the Durban July, Safe Passage repeated that placing on his reappearance in the Charity Mile. Yeni held his mount up that day, angling towards the center to make up ground turning in. Bingwa stole a march on the field at the two-furlong pole and Yeni didn't give Safe Passage a hard time once the bird had flown.

Over ten furlongs, Safe Passage is unbeaten. Mike De Kock's gelding beat his elders as a two-year-old over this distance in 2021 and comfortably beat Pomp And Power and Aragosta in the prestigious Daily News 2000 before the July last season.

De Kock was pleased with Safe Passage's draw in stall ten and he'll be getting half a kilo from Sparkling Water, despite holding the same Merit Rating of 122. Safe Passage will be my sole selection.
