An elite field of the world's best golfers have assembled in France to compete for the coveted gold medal on the greens of Le Golf National this weekend. Which golfer will achieve Olympic glory in Paris come Sunday?

Xander Schauffele of the United States returns to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Rory Sabbatini of Slovakia at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Le Golf National is the current venue of the Open de France on the DP World Tour and played host to the 2018 Ryder Cup, won by Team Europe.

Past and present Major winners who will tee off on the Albatross Course this Thursday include Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jason Day, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Rory Mcllroy

Rory McIlroy has been in great shape on the PGA Tour since the end of April, with results of victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship.

He then placed T12 at the PGA Championship, T4 at the RDC Canadian Open, T15 at the Memorial Tournament, 2nd at the U.S. Open and T4 at the Genesis Scottish Open before missing the cut at the Open Championship.

Other notable performances achieved by McIlroy this season include finishing T2 at the Dubai Invitational, victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T24 at the Genesis Invitational, T21 at the Cognizant Classic, T21 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T19 at the Players Championship, 3rd at the Valero Texas Open and T22 at the Masters.

The four-time Major winner has made two appearances at Le Golf National, placing 4th in 2010 and 3rd in 2016.

The Northern Irishman placed just outside the medals at the 2020 Olympics after finishing T4 in Tokyo.

McIlroy has found his rhythm on the golf course lately and will be hard to stop in Paris this weekend.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm was outstanding in the early months on the LIV Golf Tour, placing T3 in Mayakoba, T8 in Las Vegas, 5th in Jeddah, T8 in Hong Kong, T4 in Miami, T45 at the Masters, T3 in Adelaide, T10 in Singapore before missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

After withdrawing from the event in Houston and the U.S. Open, Rahm has made a strong comeback, with results of T3 in Nashville, T10 in Andalucia, T7 at the Open Championship, and victory in the United Kingdom last weekend.

The former world number one has featured once at the Open de France, finishing T5 overall in 2018.

Rahm picked up his first win in the LIV Golf League in his previous outing and can make it two consecutive tournament victories in France this weekend.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann was at the top of his game at the beginning of the season on the DP World Tour and LIV Golf Tour.

He enjoyed results of 5th at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship, victory at the ISPS Handa Australian Open, T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T30 in Las Vegas, victory in Mayakoba, 3rd at the International Series in Oman (Asian Tour) and victory in Jeddah.

Niemann has continued to perform at the highest standard in the LIV Golf League since his two wins this year, placing T4 in Hong Kong, T9 in Miami, T3 in Adelaide, T7 in Singapore, T32 in Houston, T3 in Nashville, T6 in Andalucia and T2 in the United Kingdom last weekend.

Niemann has produced fair results at the Majors this season, finishing T22 at the Masters T22, T39 at the PGA Championship and T58 Open Championship.

The Chilean golfer placed T10 overall at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Niemann has been in tremendous touch during 2024 and will have every chance of winning gold at Le Golf National this weekend.

Sepp Straka

Sepp Straka was playing excellent golf between mid-March and June this year, placing T16 at the Players Championship, MC at the Valspar Championship, T16 at the Masters, T5 at the RBC Heritage, T11 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T8 at the Wells Fargo Championship, MC at the PGA Championship, T5 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T5 at the Memorial Tournament.

Straka has been inconsistent in his subsequent five starts, finishing T56 at the U.S. Open, T23 at the Travelers Championship, T61 at the John Deere Classic, MC at the Scottish Open and T22 at the Open Championship.

Additional highlights from Straka's season include placing T12 at the Sentry and T26 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Austrian golfer finished T10 at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Straka has been in contention to win another title this season and could surprise the field with victory in Paris if he can replicate his form from earlier in the year.

Verdict

McIlroy has three tournament victories under his belt this year and will fancy his chances to add a gold medal to his illustrious career achievements in Paris this weekend.

Rahm returned to the winner's circle in his last outing and is a contender to win in France.

Niemann's superb form this season gives him an excellent chance to become an Olympic champion in Paris this weekend.

Straka has played solid golf this year and can cause an upset victory at Le Golf National come Sunday.
