The DP World Tour and players return to the Houghton Golf Club after a one-year hiatus with the Joburg Open on the line. Who will emerge victorious in Johannesburg come Sunday?
Dean Burmester will not be back to defend his title after a three-stroke victory over Darren Fichardt in 2023.
Past and present champions of this event who will tee off on Thursday include Dan Bradbury, Darren Fichardt, Haydn Porteous, Shubhankar Sharma and Andy Sullivan.
These are our four selections that could win this weekend.
Jayden Schaper
Jayden Schaper had a decent beginning to his season on the DP World Tour, with results of MC at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, T13 at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, T21 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T61 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship and MC at the Bahrain Championship.
Schaper found another gear after those results, placing T5 at the Qatar Masters, 4th at the Magical Kenya Open and T16 at the recent South African Open Championship.
The South African has made four appearances at the Joburg Open, finishing T18 in 2020, T114 in 2021, T18 in 2022 and T9 in 2023.
Schaper looks ready to secure his maiden DP World Tour title at the Houghton Golf Club this weekend.
Shaun Norris
Shaun Norris has been in great touch on the DP World Tour and Challenge Tour this year, winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship and placing T6 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T16 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship and T9 at the MyGolfLife Open.
Norris missed the cut in his subsequent event at the NTT Data Pro-Am before bouncing back with a T9 at the South African Open Championship last weekend.
The South African golfer has achieved top results in his last five starts at the Joburg Open, placing T3 in 2017, 3rd in 2018, T3 in 2021, T18 in 2022 and MC in 2023.
Norris has been playing well and has gone close to winning this tournament in recent years.
Daniel van Tonder
Daniel van Tonder did not have the ideal start to his season on the DP World Tour, missing the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.
However, Van Tonder bounced back to his best on the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour, with results of 2nd at the Mediclinic Invitational, victory at the SDC Open, victory at the MyGolfLife Open, T6 at the Cell C Cape Town Open, T9 at the MyGolfLife Open and T9 at the NTT Data Pro-Am before missing the cut at the South African Open Championship last weekend.
The 33-year-old South African has had mixed results in his last nine appearances at the Joburg Open, finishing T19 in 2013, 9th in 2014, MC in 2015, MC in 2016, MC in 2017, T76 in 2020, T85 in 2021, T32 in 2022 and MC in 2023.
Van Tonder has been in top form lately and will fancy his chances to lift the winning trophy in Johannesburg this weekend.
Sam Bairstow
Sam Bairstow had a mediocre start to his season on the DP World Tour, finishing T52 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, MC at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T77 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Bairstow regained his touch after those, placing T16 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, T32 at the Bahrain Championship, T10 at the Qatar Masters and T11 at the recent South African Open Championship.
The 26-year-old finished T54 at the Joburg in 2023 on debut.
Bairstow has been thereabouts lately and can challenge for the title at the Houghton Golf Club this weekend.
