The DP World Tour and a host of the world's best golfers remain in Dubai to compete in the 35th edition of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club. Who will win the first Rolex Series event of the year?
Rory McIlroy is back to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Patrick Reed in 2023 and will attempt to win the tournament for a record fourth time.
Past and present major winners that will tee off on Thursday include Brian Harman, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Adam Scott, and Padraig Harrington. Also competing are Ryder Cup winners Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard.
These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.
Tyrrell Hatton
Tyrrell Hatton has been in solid form during his last five starts on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, placing T16 at the Tour Championship, MC at the Horizon Irish Open, T2 at the BMW PGA Championship, T11 at the DP World Tour Championship and T14 at the Sentry.
Hatton's other notable performances from last year include finishing T6 at the WM Phoenix Open, T4 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, 2nd at the Players Championship, T19 at the RBC Heritage, 3rd at the Wells Fargo Championship and T5 at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
He was then T15 at the PGA Championship, T12 at the Memorial Tournament, T3 at the RBC Canadian Open, T6 at the Genesis Scottish Open and T20 at the Open Championship.
The 32-year-old Englishman has compiled an excellent record at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, missing the cut on debut before placing T55 in 2015, T8 in 2016, T3 in 2017, 3rd in 2018, T38 in 2019, T22 in 2021, T4 in 2022, and T38 in 2023.
Hatton has gone close to winning this tournament multiple times and will look to get over the finish line come Sunday.
Adam Scott
Adam Scott looked the winner in his previous start at the ISPS Handa Australian Open before a triple bogey late in the final round saw his chances slip away, finishing T4 overall.
Before that, Scott had been in great touch on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, placing T7 at the Wyndham Championship, MC at the Horizon Irish Open, T7 at the BMW PGA Championship, MC at the Japan Open Golf Championship (Asian Tour), T41 at the ZOZO Championship, T5 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and 6th at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship.
Other prominent performances achieved by Scott last year include finishing T5 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T8 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T9 at the Memorial Tournament and T19 at the Travelers Championship.
Surprisingly, Scott has only featured once at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, placing a solid T9 over in 2022.
Scott has been knocking hard and has the form to emerge as the winner in Dubai this weekend.
Thriston Lawrence
Thriston Lawrence has been in excellent form on the DP World Tour lately, placing T24 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, T5 at the DP World Tour Championship, T7 at the Joburg Open, T10 at the Investec South African Open Championship, T11 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T2 at the Dubai Invitational last weekend.
Apart from those performances, Lawrence finished T14 at the SDC Championship, victory at the BMW International Open, T12 at the SunBet Challenge (Sunshine Tour) and T3 at the Horison Irish Open last year.
The four-time winner on the DP World Tour missed the cut on debut at this tournament in 2023.
Lawrence has come good in recent months and can go all the way at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Zander Lombard
Zander Lombard has been thereabouts on the DP World Tour since mid-November, placing T22 at the DP World Tour Championship, T4 at the Joburg Open, T12 at the Investec South African Open Championship, T25 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T6 at the recent Dubai Invitational.
Additional highlights achieved by Lombard last year include finishing T2 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, T6 at the Singapore Classic, T17 at the Thailand Classic, T2 at the Jonsson Workwear Open, T10 at the Cazoo Open De France and 2nd at the Open de Espana.
The 28-year-old South African has yet to make an impact at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, with results of MC in 2018, T58 in 2020, MC in 2021 and MC in 2023.
Lombard has been thereabouts and has the form to cause an upset victory at the Emirates Golf Club this weekend.
Verdict
Scott will be out to redeem himself by winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic this weekend.
Lawrence is holding form and will fancy his chances to add another DP World Tour title to his resume.
Lombard has done nothing wrong lately and is the long-shot value bet at the Emirates Golf Club.
