Western Province vs Lions Predictions

Western Province are ready to defend their CSA One-Day Challenge title as they welcome the Lions to Newlands. The Lions have a more settled squad due to less national callups. They also have had a better lead-up to the Cup, so I fancy them to take the win.

  • Lions’ Reeza Hendricks has scored 59, 30, 34* & 77* in his last 6 innings.
  • Lions’ Connor Esterhuizen has scored 69 & 39 in his last 2 innings.
  • Western Province’s David Bedingham has scored 39, 37, 48, 45 & 27 in his last 9 innings.
  • Western Province’s Eddie Moore has scored 87*, 31* & 48 in his last 4 whiteball innings.

Head-to-Head

Both teams have won two of the last four matches between the two sides.

Western Province Form

Western Province won six of their seven matches last season, the other match being rained-off. Their last match in the tournament was last season’s final against North West, which they won by 107 runs.

Province recovered from 39/3 and 81/4 thanks to a 199-run fifth-wicket stand between skipper Kyle Verreynne (111) and Mihlali Mpongwana (105). Province set North West a daunting target of 307/8 off their 50 overs.

The Province bowlers put North West on the back foot by reducing them to 42/3 in the 10th over. They soon slipped to 115/6 before some lower-order resistance helped them to scrape their way to 200 all out in the 41st over.

Western Province Team News

WP captain Kyle Verreynne, Mihlali Mpongwana and Tony de Zorzi are unavailable as they are on duty with the national squad.

Lions Form

The Lions went winless in their first four matches last season, with three losses and an abandoned match. They then won their next three matches on the bounce. Their campaign ended with an eight-wicket win over the Titans.

In their last group match the Titans folded to 78 all out in the 23rd over. Tshepo Moreki (3/23, econ 3.94) cleaned up the tail after three early run-outs left them on 52/6.

The in-form Ryan Rickelton raced to 41 off 32 balls as Province stormed through to an eight-wicket win off 11.1 overs.

Lions Team News

The Lions have had a good lead-up to the CSA One-Day Challenge and are looking strong and ready to take on the defending champions.

Verdict

I am backing the Lions to win. I am also backing Reeza Hendricks to top score for the Lions.

David Bedingham is a good bet to top score for Western Province.
