Head-to-Head
The two sides have met three times in this tournament. The first match was drawn, the Dolphins won the second by eight wickets (2022/23) and Province was the last match by an innings and 259 runs (2023/24).
Western Province Form
Province made it to the final of the 4-Day Series last season, only to lose by 99 runs.
Province took a first-innings after the Lions has stuttered to 35/5 before mounting a recovery. Dane Paterson took 5/31 in the Lions innings and Gavin Kaplan and Daniel Smith both scored 60.
The Lions were again struggling at 113/6 in their second innings thanks to great bowling from Tshepo Moreki (5/65) before Delano Potgieter (155*) led an incredible recovery to set Province 308 for the win.
Tony de Zorzi (55) and Daniel Smith (52) kept Province in contention, but a lack of support in the middle order saw them bowled out for 208 to lose by an innings and 259 runs.
Western Province Team News
Province have a well-rounded side that is performing well and they should be too strong for the Dolphins.
Dolphins Form
The Dolphins ended last season with three draws, followed by a win against North West, before losing their last match to Western Province by 259 runs.
Province piled on three centuries as they amassed 592/6 declared in their first innings, Prenelan Subrayen the only bowler to enjoy much success in taking 4/86.
The Dolphins were rolled out for 202 in their first innings (Marques Ackerman 45) and, in their follow-on, imploded for 131 all out. Ackerman scored 38 and JJ Smuts 44*
Dolphins Team News
Marques Ackerman was the top run-scorer in last season’s four-day competition, and he comes into this match in good form from the white-ball season.
Verdict
I am backing Western Province to win. I am also backing Eddie Moore to top score for Western Province. Marques Ackerman is a good bet to top score for the Dolphins.
