England vs Australia Preview

This series has been outstanding thus far. Australia lead 2-0 but both results could easily have gone in England’s favour.

That said, England simply must win the next three matches to take the urn, a drawn series will see Australia retain it. Desperation could set in, but with that, we can expect another exciting match filled with drama. I am going to stick with England to come out on top eventually.

  • England have won 11 of their last 15 Test matches.
  • England’s Ben Duckett scored 98 & 83 runs in the 2nd Test.
  • Australia have won the first 2 test matches of the series.
  • Australia’s Usman Khawaja has scored 50+ runs in 3 of his last 4 innings.
  • Australia’s Steven Smith scored 110 runs in the 1st innings of the last Test.

Head to Head

Australia lead the Ashes 2-0 after the first two Test matches. Both victories have been very close that could have gone either way.

England Form

England went into the second Test at Lord’s knowing they should have been 1-0 up rather than down in the series. And now they go into this third Test knowing they are 2-0 down and that score could easily have been reversed.

In the second Test, England won the toss and bowled first in good conditions. Unfortunately, the bowlers didn’t make it count as Australia piled on 416 runs.

England then got the best of batting conditions and made it count at the start, racing to 188-1. Unfortunately, things went south from there as the hosts were all out for 325 runs, giving the Aussies a 90+ run first-innings lead.

A solid bowling display kept England in the contest as they bowled Australia out for 279 runs. Needing 371 runs to win was always going to be tough, but the surface was still good to bat on so the game was on.

However, at 45-4 England looked down and out at that point. Ben Stokes and Ben Duckett revived the hosts chances with a 132-run partnership. Duckett was dismissed for 83 after his 98 in the first innings.

From there Ben Stokes took charge after a controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow. The England captain smashed boundary after boundary on his way to 155 runs. When he was dismissed with the hosts needing 70 to win, their chances were all but gone as England were bowled out for 327, losing by 43 runs.

England Team News

Ollie Pope is injured and there are other changes expected. Jimmy Anderson has not been effective so could be rested, and Moeen Ali is likely to come back into the side. Mark Wood is also likely to play.

Australia Form

Australia are 2-0 up in the series and with three to play, they just need to avoid defeat to hold onto the urn for another year.

In the second Test they batted superbly in the first Test, scoring 416 runs. Steven Smith top scored with 110 runs. The bowlers then ensured a 92-run lead, bowling England out for 325 runs.

Usman Khawaja continued his good form, scoring 77 runs in the second innings before being bowled out for 279, leaving England a tough target of 371 runs.

The pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood took three wickets each. They had England in early trouble, but the hosts fought back to get within 43 runs of the total.

In the end, Australia were once again narrow victors.

Australia Team News

Australia are unlikely to fiddle too much with their side. Nathan Lyon is however out of the series so we can expect Todd Murphy to get a run.

Verdict

England are backed to win the third Test with Ben Duckett to top score in the first innings.

For Australia, Steven Smith is the safe bet to top score, while Usman Khawaja to score 50+ in the match is also decent value.
