Head to Head
Proteas have been victorious in five of their last six Test matches against the West Indies. They drew the first Test of this series.
West Indies Form
The West Indies are bottom of the Worl Test Championship and will need a good result to start their climb out of that position. However, despite the draw in the first Test, the hosts struggled and only managed that result due to the weather.
The visitors scored 357 runs batting first to which the Windies responded with 233. With time running out in the match after more than two days were lost to rain, South Africa raced to 173 in 29 overs before declaring.
That left the West Indies with 298 to win. Early wickets put them on the backfoot but Alick Athanaze’s 92 runs was enough to secure the draw.
West Indies Injuries & Team News
There are likely to be a change or two to the West Indies side. Shamar Joseph could start his first in his home nation.
South Africa Form
South Africa will be largely pleased with their performance in the first Test. Victory was almost certainly theirs had weather not taken out so much time.
However, batting first, South Africa scored 357 runs with no batsmen scoring 100+. Temba Bavuma came closest with a patient 86 runs.
Keshav Maharaj then took 4-76 on a slow pitch to reduce the hosts to 233 all out. With time running out, Tristan Stubbs smashed 68 off 50 balls as South Africa declared on 173-3, setting the West Indies a total of 298 to win in just over 50 overs.
The bowlers toiled on a slow and unresponsive pitch but could only get the West Indies to 201-5 in 56 overs.
South Africa Injuries & Team News
Nandre Burger could make a return to the side to add some more pace to the lineup.
Verdict
I am backing Temba Bavuma to top score in the first innings for South Africa and score 50+ runs. For the hosts, Alick Athanaze is backed.
