South Africa vs Pakistan Preview
The first Test was a very nervy encounter for both sides but South Africa came out on top...just. They have now qualified for the World Test Championship final, so they are free of the pressure.

- Pakistan’s Babar Azam scored 50 runs in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test.
Head to Head
South Africa have won three of their last five Test matches against Pakistan, including the first Test of this series by two wickets.
South Africa Form
South Africa will be pleased and relieved with the result in the first Test. It was a cracking Test match where momentum swung regularly, but the victory means the hosts have qualified for the World Test Championship final in 2025.
Dane Paterson took 5-61 when South Africa bowled first in the first Test while debutant, Corbin Bosch managed 4-63 as Pakistan were all out for 211 runs. Aidan Markram found his form again with a well-played 89 runs in response, although the rest of the top order failed to reach 10.
Corbin Bosch’s brilliant debut continued with a crucial 81 runs down the order to help South Africa to 301 and a first innings lead. Pakistan looked better in response, but Marco Jansen’s 6-52 pulled them back to 237 all out.
Still, a total of 148 wasn’t bad considering how the pitch was playing. Markram again managed 37 runs while Temba Bavuma got himself to 40, but wickets continued to fall throughout.
With 49 required, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada came together with eight wickets down. The two star bowlers put on a 50-run stand to secure the win.
South Africa Injuries & Team News
There may be a change or two to the Proteas side. The batsmen did not do themselves justice in the first Test and four bowlers at Newlands may not be the best option.
Pakistan Form
Pakistan will be kicking themselves after losing the first Test. Although they looked behind in the game for most of the five days, they were well ahead in the final session of play but failed to capitalise.
Kamran Ghulam’s 54 runs in the first innings helped Pakistan struggle to 211. The visitors bowled very well to ensure South Africa could only reach 301 runs in their first innings.
In the second innings, Pakistan started well with Saim Ayub, Shan Masood and Babar Azam all getting good starts, but failed to kick on. Saud Shakeel top scored with 84 runs, but no one stayed with him as Pakistan could only reach 237, setting a total of 148, one which could have at least been 200.
Mohammad Abbas came within a whisker of pulling off the spectacular, taking 6-54 to put Pakistan very much in a winning position. But when the hosts were eight down, they failed to close the game out despite still requiring 49 runs to win.
Pakistan Injuries & Team News
Pitch conditions will play a role in selection at Newlands, but I expect a very similar side to the first Test.
Verdict
South Africa are tipped to win the 2nd Test against Pakistan with Aiden Markram to continue his fine form from the first Test. For Pakistan, Babar Azam managed 50 runs in the second innings and may offer value.
