India vs New Zealand Preview

India have suffered a very unexpected series loss but they will do whatever they can do avoid a 3-0 whitewash. The hosts are still favourites but for me the value is with Devon Conway.

  • India have lost their last 2 Test matches.
  • India have not been whitewashed on home soil in the 20th century.
  • India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal top scored in his last Test innings.
  • New Zealand lead the series 2-0.
  • New Zealand’s Devon Conway has scored 50+ runs in the first innings of his last 2 Test matches.
  • New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner took 13 wickets in the 2nd Test against India.

Head to Head

New Zealand have already secured the series with victories in the opening two games.

India Form

India have dominated Test cricket on home soil for over a decade which makes the current scenario almost unbelievable. 2-0 down and a home series loss, staring a whitewash in the face with batsmen who can’t seem to buy a run.

It is not a very familiar story for India, and they won’t be used to this kind of negative scrutiny. On two occasions, the batsmen have just not delivered in this series and New Zealand have made the hosts pay a heavy price.

After losing the first Test, in which they were bowled out for 46 in the first innings, India would have fancied their chances of bouncing back. I sure did considering their dominant form in recent years.

However, after the visitors put on 259 in their first innings, India’s batsmen failed again, bowled out for 156. A second innings score of 255 by New Zealand left India with too much to do as they could only reach 245, losing the game by 113 runs.

India Injuries & Team News

It is a tough spot for India. Do they ring the changes or trust the players who have been so good for so long. There is likely to be a few changes, but what they really need is for the batsmen to put up big performances.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand would not have arrived in India with many expectations. Of course they would have, at least to the cameras, shown belief, but given India’s superb home record, not many believed the Black Caps would be heading into the third Test with a possible whitewash of the hosts on the cards.

After winning the first Test, New Zealand needed to be solid on the opening day of the second. Batting first was a bonus and Devon Conway (76) and Rachin Ravindra (65) ensured the Black Caps reached 259 in their first innings.

While not the biggest score, Mitchell Santner produced a superb bowling effort, taking 7-53 as India were all out for 156, handing the visitors a 100+ run lead.

That is not quite big enough to be a match-winning lead, especially in India. But the batsmen again stood up, this time Tom Latham with 86 while Rom Blundell and Glenn Phillips added 41 and 48 respectively in a 255 total.

On a deteriorating pitch, 359 was always a tough ask for India, but if anyone could do it, the hosts could. Santner again, however, stood up, taking 6-14 to ensure a 113-run win and a 13-wicket haul on a personal level.

The pitch could force a change or two but New Zealand are more than likely going to stick with the same side.

Verdict

I am backing Devon Conway and Yashasvi Jaiswal to top score in the first innings for their respective teams. Conway is also tipped to score 50+ in the first innings.
