England vs West Indies Preview

England were far too good in the opening Test and their understanding of conditions clearly played a huge role in their dominance. Joe Root looked in fine form in the first innings, he is backed again in the run scoring markets.

I am backing Joe Root to score big again in the English first innings.

  • England have won their last 3 home test matches against the West Indies.
  • England’s Joe Root has scored 84, 122 & 68 runs in 3 of his last 4 Test innings.
  • England have lost 4 of their last 6 Test matches.
  • West Indies lost the 1st Test by an innings + against England.

Head to Head

England have been victorious in three of their last six Tests against the West Indies. The Windies have only managed one win along with two draws.

England Form

England cruised to a massive win by an innings and 114-runs in the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s. Bowling first, Gus Atkinson showed just why he is so highly rated, taking 7-45 as the visitors were all out for 121 runs.

In response, Zak Crawley (76), Ollie Pope (57), Joe Root (68), Harry Brook (50) and Jamie Smith (70) all scored 50+ scores in a total of 371 runs. It was a satisfactory batting display but there will be disappointment that none of those players went on to score big.

For this match it was however more than enough as Gus Atkinson once again starred, taking 5-61 as the Windies were all out for 136 runs. Atkinson returned figures of 12-106 in the match.

England Injuries & Team News

The only change expected is for James Anderson to be left out after retiring from Test cricket.

West Indies Form

The West Indies will be very disappointed with their efforts in the first test as they were humiliated by an innings at 114 runs.

Batting first, three batsmen reached 20 runs, but no one managed to breach the 30-run mark in a 121-run total. They bowled reasonably well, holding England to 371 runs, but it was a massive first innings lead. Jayden Seales took four wickets.

In their second innings, three batsmen again crossed the 20-run mark with only one managing to get beyond 30 runs. That was no. 9 Gudakesh Motie who simply swung from the hips.

West Indies Injuries & Team News

The West Indies showed earlier this year in Australia how they can bounce back from a big defeat. I don’t expect drastic changes to the side.

Verdict

Joe Root was good in the first Test. I am backing him to cross 50 runs in the first innings again and top score for England.
