Head to Head
With four Test matches played in the series, Australia lead 2-1 after winning the fourth Test match.
Australia Form
Australia have ensured they can no longer lose the series with a 2-1 lead going into this match. The hosts won the fourth Test by 184 runs.
Batting first in Melbourne, Sam Konstas scored 60 on debut while Usman Khawaja added 57 in an 89-run opening stand. Marnus Labuschagne found some form with 72 while Steven Smith eventually got his form back with a brilliant 140 runs in a total of 474.
Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon took three wickets each as India responded with 369, conceding a 105-run lead.
In the second innings, Labuschagne scored 70 with Australia bowled out for 234 runs, leaving India a tough total of 340 to win on the final day.
The visitors fought with the bat to save the game more than win it, but Cummins and Boland again each came up with three wickets to secure the win.
Australia Injuries & Team News
Conditions in Sydney for the New Year may force a change. Australia generally plays two spinners at the SCG, however, that will be left to be decided once the pitch is seen.
India Form
India will be very disappointed with their performance since they won the first Test. They were blown away in the second, struggled to a draw in the third and lost the fourth. They have bowled well throughout, but the batsmen have not done their job.
After the hosts scored 474 batting first, India responded with 369. While on paper that isn’t poor, the top and middle order failed. Yashasvi Jaiswal fought a lone battle with 82 at the top of the order until Nitish Kumar Reddy batted magnificently down in eighth with 114 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah was once again a menace, taking 5-57 as the Indian bowlers again found a way to keep the team in it, bowling Australia out for 234.
The 340 total was always a tough ask to score, but more fight was needed. Jaiswal again had to go alone, scoring 84 runs. Other than Rishabh Pant (30), no other batsmen scored more than nine runs.
India Injuries & Team News
India have a bit issue in the batting department. The quality is there but no one is managing to score consistent runs, other than Jaiswal.
Verdict
Australia are backed to win with Marnus Labuschagne tipped to top score in their first innings. For India, Yashasvi Jaiswal batted superbly in the last Test and is worth backing.
