Australia vs India Predictions

Australia are overwhelming favourites to win the first Test in Perth, understandably so after India’s home defeat. However, India do have a strong record in Australia and certainly have the capabilities to cause an upset.

I am going to steer clear of a result given that Australia have not played Test cricket since March. Instead, I am looking at the run scoring markets with Marnus Labuschagne and Shubman Gill offering good value.

  • Australia have won 6 of their last 7 Test matches.
  • Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne scored 90 runs in his last Test match.
  • Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne averages 103.80 in 3 matches in Perth.
  • Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has scored 143, 50, 204 and 104 runs in 4 of his last 6 innings in Perth.
  • India have lost their last 3 Test matches.
  • India have won 4 of their last 8 Test matches in Australia.
  • India’s Shubman Gill scored 90 runs in his last Test match.

Head to Head

This makes for a very interesting series as India have, in recent times, been very successful in Australia. Of the last eight Tests played between these sides in Australia, India have won four, Australia two and two draws.

This includes two four match series, both of which India won 2-1.

Australia Form

Australia have been in very good form in Test cricket over the last couple of years.  Since the Ashes in 2023, they have won six of their seven Test matches. Those were against Pakistan and West Indies at home and lastly against New Zealand away.

While none of those are likely to offer the threat of India, the Aussies have the players to make home conditions count this time around. They have lost their last two home Test series against India and will want to rectify that.

The one thing counting against the hosts is that they have not played Test cricket since March. Australia will have to get into the swing of things very quickly if they are to restore their home dominance over India.

Australia Injuries & Team News

Australia will be captained by Pat Cummins, but they have a reasonably settled Test side. Once again, the fast-bowling trio of Mitchell Starc, Cummins and Josh Hazelwood will be key to their success while Scott Boland is another great option. Nathan Lyon also has a decent record against India.

India Form

It is a strange time in Indian cricket at the moment. They are still a very good side, capable of winning in all conditions, but they do come into this series after a shock series loss at home to New Zealand.

It also wasn’t just a series loss; the Black Caps whitewashed the hosts 3-0. Before that series defeat, India had won six Test matches in a row, all of which were at home or in the sub-continent.

There will however be some confidence in the Indian side since they have won their last two Test series in Australia.

India Injuries & Team News

India have stopped short of making wholesale panic changes after their series defeat at home. They will be hopeful that Virat Kohli can find his form considering his strong record in Australia. On the bowling front, they are likely to go with just the one spinner in Perth – Ravi Ashwin could miss out.

Verdict

I am backing Marnus Labuschagne and Shubman Gill to both top score for their sides in the first innings. The former is also backed to score 50+ runs in the first innings.
