The ICC T20 World Cup represents the pinnacle of twenty-over cricket on the international stage, showcasing the finest cricketers in exhilarating matches to determine who becomes champion of the world every two years.

Twenty-over cricket had grown in popularity domestically for four years around the globe after becoming more accessible to fans before the first ICC World Twenty20 World Cup took place.

India won the inaugural tournament in South Africa in 2007 after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in the final.

England secured the first-ever ICC World Championship title in any format of cricket after defeating Australia by seven wickets in the 2010 final in the West Indies.

In 2012, the competition was to expand a 16-team format; however, only in the 2014 edition of the World Twenty20 was it implemented, which included all ten full members of the ICC and six associates who had to qualify for the event.

In 2018, the tournament was renamed the ICC T20 World Cup for the 2020 edition in Australia; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

After seven semi-final failures at ICC World Cup events, South Africa reached their first-ever final against India at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies, losing by seven runs after an inspired spell of bowling by Player of the Tournament, Jasprit Bumrah.

In its current format, all 20 participating teams are divided into four groups of five, with each team playing their rivals within each group once.

During the group stages, two points are awarded for a win and one point for a no result.

The top two teams from each group progress to the Super 8s stage of the tournament, who are split into two groups of four and play three matches against the other sides within their group to determine the semi-finalists.

The winner of each group will face the runner-up of the opposing group in the semi-finals, with the winners of each match progressing to the final.

In case the scores are level after 20 overs, the match will be decided by a super over. Each team will face six balls, with the highest score securing the victory.
