Ireland vs Sri Lanka Predictions

In May, Ireland won the T20 Tri-Series against Scotland and Netherlands without losing a match. Prior to that they lost a three-match T20 series against Pakistan at home 2-1. Sri Lanka have won all three of their T20I series this year by a 2-1 margin – against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Pakistan. They have the class and form to beat Ireland comfortably, whose batters have not been in great form.

  • Sri Lanka’s Dhananjaya de Silva has scored 102, 108, 70 & 36 in his last 5 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis has scored 82, 23, 30 & 23 in his last 5 innings.
  • Ireland’s Lorcan Tucker has scored 51, 73, 40 & 55 in his last 5 innings.
  • Ireland’s Andy Balbirnie has scored 35 & 56 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

The two teams were scheduled to play their first match against one another in a warmup game before the 2022 T20 World Cup, but the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Ireland Form

Ireland’s last match was their final match of the Netherlands Tri-Nations T20I series against Netherlands and Scotland. They clinched the title by beating Netherlands by three runs at The Hague.

Ireland scored 161/6, with Paul Stirling (36) getting the innings off to a good start before George Dockrell (53* off 30 balls) gave Ireland a vital boost at the end of their 20 overs.

Netherlands got off to a good start before Mark Adair (2/21) and Craig Young (2/35) made inroads into the Netherlands top order and bowled superbly to limit Netherlands to 158/5 off their 20 overs.

Ireland Team News

Ireland’s bowlers have been performing well, but they need their batters to start producing with greater consistency.

Sri Lanka Form

Netherlands shocked Sri Lanka in their warmup game in Lauderhill, beating Sri Lanka by 20 runs.

Despite Dilshan Madushanka (2/36) knocking over two top-order batters, Netherlands batted well to reach a competitive 181/6 off their 20 overs.

Sri Lanka were rolled over for 161 off 19 overs. Dhananjaya de Silva (36) and Wanindu Hasaranga (39) both made starts but couldn’t turn them into substantial innings. Dasun Shanaka (35*) played a lone hand near the end, but by then the target was too big.

Sri Lanka Team News

There are no injury reports from the Sri Lanka squad.

Verdict

I am backing Sri Lanka to win. I am also backing Dhananjaya de Silva to top score for Sri Lanka.

Lorcan Tucker is a good bet to top score for Ireland.
