Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea Predictions

Afghanistan have enjoyed two excellent wins in a row at the start of the World Cup,  including an 84-run win over New Zealand. Papua New Guinea play attractive cricket, but they have lost their last three T20Is in a row and are unlikely to offer Afghanistan much resistance.

  • Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz has scored 76 & 80 in his 2 World Cup innings.
  • Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran scored 70 & 44 in his 2 World Cup innings.
  • Papua New Guinea’s Sese Bau has scored 29 & 50 in his last 3 innings.
  • Papua New Guinea’s Kiplin Doriga scored 27* off 18 balls in the loss to the West Indies.

Head-to-Head

The two teams have met just once before in T20Is, which was back in 2015. Afghanistan won that clash by six wickets.

Afghanistan Form

After smashing Uganda by 125 runs in their opener, Afghanistan beat New Zealand by 84 runs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80 off 56 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (44 off 41 balls) added 103 runs for the first wicket as Afghanistan posted 159/6 off their 20 overs.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (4/17, econ 5.10) and Rashid Khan (4/17, econ 4.25) led a magnificent Afghanistan bowling performance to crack the Kiwis for just 75 runs off 15.2 overs.

Afghanistan Team News

Afghanistan are in great form and are unlikely to make any changes to their team.

Papua New Guinea Form

After losing their World Cup opener against the West Indies by five wickets, Papua New Guinea lost to Uganda by three wickets.

Papua New Guinea were rolled for 77 after 19.1 overs, with Hiri Hiri top-scoring with 15 off 19 balls.

Papua New Guinea bowled superbly as they stretched the Uganda run chase into the 19th over before the Africans knocked the winning runs off with three wickets in hand. Alei Nao (2/16, econ 4.00) and Norman Vanua (2/19, econ 4.75) were the best PNG bowlers.

Papua New Guinea Team News

Papua New Guinea will need a great all-round performance to have any chance of pressing Afghanistan for a win.

Verdict

I am backing Afghanistan to win. I am also backing Rahmanullah Gurbaz to top score for Afghanistan.

Sese Bau is a good bet to top score for Papua New Guinea.
