The T20 Blast was the first professional twenty-over competition globally, revitalising domestic cricket by attracting new fans to the shorter format of the game and showcasing the best players in the world in action-packed matches in England every season.

In 2003, The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) created a shorter format of the game, with each team playing 20 overs innings instead of 50, to make it more accessible to fans by reducing the time to complete a match, offering face-paced action and thrilling run chases.

The competition was known as the Twenty20 Cup from 2003 to 2009. Eighteen teams participated in the inaugural season, including Gloucestershire Gladiators, Warwickshire Bears, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, Worcestershire Royals, Glamorgan Dragons, and the Somerset Sabres (Midlands/Wales/West Division).

Leicestershire Foxes, Derbyshire Scorpions, Yorkshire Phoenix, Lancashire Lightning, Nottinghamshire Outlaws, and the Durham Dynamos (North Division).
Surrey Lions, Sussex Sharks, Kent Spitfires, Middlesex Crusaders, Essex Eagles, and the Hampshire Hawks (South Division).

Sides were divided into three divisions of six teams each and played a round-robin format to decide who would progress to the knockout rounds.

Warwickshire Bears and Surrey Lions competed in the inaugural final, with Surrey winning by nine wickets to clinch the title.

In 2010, two groups of nine teams were established, with Somerset and the Hampshire Royals contesting the final. Both teams scored 173 in their allotted overs, but Hamshire Royals won the title after losing fewer wickets.

The competition was called the Friends Provident T20 and Friend Life T20 from 2010 to 2013, and the Natwest T20 Blast from 2014 to 2017 before it was rebranded the Vitality T20 Blast in 2018.

Leicestershire Foxes was the first team to win the T20 Blast three times, achieving this milestone in 2011 before the Hampshire Hawks equalled that record in 2023.

In its current format, 18 teams are divided into two groups, the North and South, consisting of nine teams. Each side plays six teams in their group home and away and two teams once (one at home and one away).

The top four teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, where the winners will contest the T20 Blast Finals Day, consisting of the semi-finals and final.

The late Andrew Symonds scored the fastest century in the competition in 2004 off 34 balls, a feat equalled by fellow Australian Sean Abbott in 2023.
