South Africa vs Pakistan Preview

South Africa were poor in the first ODI and will be keen to bounce back at Newlands. I am predicted a home win.

  • South Africa won the T20I series 2-0 against Pakistan.
  • South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen scored 86 runs in the 1st ODI.
  • Pakistan won their last ODI series.
  • Pakistan’s Saim Ayub scored 100+ runs in the 1st ODI.
  • Pakistan won the 1st ODI against South Africa.

Head to Head

Pakistan lead the current series 1-0 after a three-wicket win in Paarl in the first ODI.

South Africa Form

South Africa will be very disappointed with their performance in the first ODI in Paarl. To win the toss and bat first was already a crucial win for the hosts, they followed that up with a very solid start to their winnings.

However, after a 70-run opening stand, the Proteas collapsed to 88-4. Thereafter a rebuild was required, started with Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram. Klaasen went on to score a brilliant 86 while Markram, along with two other batsmen, fell in the 30s.

The total of 239 was never really enough, although the Proteas bowlers did their best to make it a good total. All the bowlers did well to hold Pakistan off, but eventually the visitors won with three balls to spare.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

Temba Bavuma could come back into the side for the second ODI after missing out through injury. The same applies to Keshav Maharaj.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan were superb in the first ODI against South Africa, winning by three wickets with three balls to spare. After the Proteas made a flying start, part-time spinner, Salman Agha took four quick wickets to pull the hosts scoring rate back.

The rest of the innings was about South Africa recovering and getting as many as possible. They made their way to 239 before Pakistan had an opportunity to respond.

It did not start well for Pakistan and at 60-4 they looked in big trouble. But Saim Ayub (109) and Salman Agha (82) put on a superb 141-run stand. Thereafter the visitors lost a couple more quick wickets but man of the match, Agha hung in there to see Pakistan home.

Pakistan Injuries & Team News

I do not foresee any major changes to the winning side from Paarl.

Verdict

I am backing South Africa to hit back with a win at Newlands with Heinrich Klaasen showing some very good form.
