Head to Head
Pakistan have won three of their last five ODIs against South Africa, however, it was South Africa who won the last match in 2023 – during the World Cup. The Proteas also won the recently completed T20I series 2-0.
South Africa Form
South Africa’s last ODI series took place at the start of October 2024, a series they won 2-1 against Ireland in Dubai. While the last ODI ended in a disappointing loss, the Proteas did not play a full-strength side.
In the T20I series against Pakistan over the last week, South Africa won the first two games comfortably before the final game was rained out.
Given that the Proteas form has not been at the top level for the last year in ODI cricket, the hosts will see this as an opportunity to get some momentum.
South Africa Injuries & Team News
All the stars return for this ODI series with Temba Bavuma at the helm. Kagiso Rabada, while he is likely to be rotated, should start a couple of games. There is also a spot for Rassie van der Dussen who impressed in the T20 format.
Pakistan Form
Pakistan have been struggling in all three formats of late, which will be quite a concern for them. They have a very strong side on paper, both with the bat and ball.
In their last ODI series, Pakistan lost the first game of the series to Zimbabwe but bounced back with two convincing wins thereafter. In the last game Kamran Ghulam scored 103 runs to help Pakistan post 303 runs in 50 overs.
Pakistan Injuries & Team News
Mohammad Rizwan captains the side and will also be important with bat in hand. As will usual stalwart, Babar Azam while newcomer, Kamran Ghulam has already started making a name for himself.
Verdict
South Africa are backed to be too strong at home with Temba Bavuma tipped for big runs. On Pakistan's side, I am backing rookie, Karman Ghulam to score big.
