The Indian Premier League is the world's most popular and lucrative franchise T20 competition, bringing together the leading cricketers from all corners of the globe to compete annually in electrifying matches and dramatic run chases to determine the IPL champion.
India's victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup marked the beginning of franchise T20 cricket when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the formation of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Eight teams participated in the inaugural IPL season in 2008, including the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians, and the Delhi Daredevils.
The late, great Shane Warne led the Rajasthan Royals to a three-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings in the final to win the first IPL tournament.
Since 2013, the IPL has been dominated by two teams, with the Mumbai Indians winning five titles and the Chennai Super Kings claiming three.
During the IPL season, two awards run concurrently. The Orange Cap is worn by the current highest-run scorer during matches, with the eventual winner retaining the cap at the end of the season. The Purple Cap is worn by the leading wicket-taker, who keeps the cap at the end of the tournament.
Each team is allowed a maximum of eight foreign-based players in their 25-man squad; however, only four can play in a match.
In its current format, the ten franchises in the IPL play each other twice, home and away in round-robin matches.
The teams that finish first and second in the standings play a qualifier to book a place in the final of the IPL, with the third and fourth-placed teams playing an eliminator to decide who will face the loser of the first qualifier.
The loser of the first qualifier and winner of the eliminator play an additional qualifier to see who will progress to the final of the Indian Premier League.
