Netherlands vs Afghanistan Preview
Afghanistan are favourites and must win to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-final. They come up against a Netherlands side who have performed superbly in this tournament though. While I fancy an Afghanistan win, this could get close.

- Netherlands’ Scott Edwards top scored in his last ODI.
- Afghanistan have won 3 of their last 6 matches.
- Afghanistan have won their last 4 ODI matches against Netherlands.
- Afghanistan’s Rahmat Shah has scored 36, 77* & 62 runs in his last 3 ODIs.
Head to Head
Afghanistan have won their last four ODIs against the Netherlands. They last played in 2022, a series Afghanistan won 3-0.
Netherlands Form
Netherlands have been the biggest surprise of the tournament to date with two wins from their six games. It is safe to say that they won’t make the semis, but they have given a great account of themselves.
Earlier in the tournament, Netherlands caused a major upset, beating South Africa. In their last match, they repeated that feat, beating Bangladesh by 87 runs.
The Netherlands scored 229 runs batting first at Eden Gardens. It was not the friendliest of batting surfaces, so the total was pretty good. Scott Edwards top scored with 68 runs.
Paul van Meerkeren then took 4-23 to bowl Bangladesh out for a measly 142 runs. Should conditions again favour them, they will fancy another upset against the other tournament surprise side.
Netherlands Injuries & Team News
I don’t foresee too many changes given how superbly this side has performed.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan are still in with a very realistic shot of making the semi-final. They are currently fifth, two points off Australia and New Zealand with three games to play.
It has been quite the tournament for Afghanistan who have been nothing short of superb. Last time out they beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets.
Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-34 in 10 overs as they restricted Sri Lanka to 241 runs. Rahmat Shah then scored 62 while Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai ended not out on 58 and 73 respectively.
Afghanistan Injuries & Team News
Afghanistan didn’t come into the tournament as one of the favourites to make the last four. They are now in with a realistic shot, but they must simply win this game. Now that they have the pressure as favourites, it should be interesting to see how they deal with it.
Verdict
Afghanistan should have too much for the Netherlands so I'm backing Rahmat Shah to top score and hit 50+ runs.
For Netherlands, there is value on captain Scott Edwards to top score.
