South Africa are in very good form and beat Australia in their last three games. Despite that, the bookies have made Australia favourites for the game so I’m backing the Proteas to upset the odds with a win.

South Africa have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning 15 of their last 20 ODIs against the Aussies. They met in an ODI series just before the World Cup, a series South Africa won 3-2 after being 2-0 down.

Australia Form

Australia have very suddenly plummeted into poor ODI form after being superb earlier this season. They beat India in India but have since failed after the Ashes victory.

They lost a series in South Africa 3-2 after being 2-0 up and then suffered a 2-1 loss to India in India. That form continued into the World Cup where the Aussies lost their opener to India by six wickets.

Batting first, Australia could only muster 199 runs with David Warner top scoring. India chased the total down but only after the Australian bowlers took three early wickets.

It might not be a must-win just yet, but Australia will not want to start with two defeats. I expect a similar side to the one that featured against India.

South Africa Form

South Africa are in red-hot form at the moment and although they are dark horses to win the trophy, with each win that horse gets a bit lighter.

Prior to the World Cup, the Proteas beat Australia at home 3-2 after losing the opening two games of the series. They then won their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka convincingly.

Batting first, South Africa scored a huge 428 runs with Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram all scoring centuries. Sri Lanka were all out for 326 which saw the Proteas win by 102 runs.

South Africa could be unchanged from the side that beat Sri Lanka. They will however look to rotate the bowlers as the tournament progresses.

I am backing South Africa to upset the odds with a win and Aiden Markram to continue his superb form with a team top score.
