4-Day Franchise Series History

The 4-Day Domestic Series has gone by various names over the years (Currie Cup, Castle Cup, Supersport Series, and The Sunfoil Series) and started as the Currie Cup in 1889. The first edition of the competition was competed by just two sides – Kimberley and Transvaal. Transvaal won the inaugural edition. The competition has expanded ever since and has featured 27 variations of teams over the years – including Rhodesia and Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.

The competition was not held during the war years and had to be postponed on other occasions over the last 100 years due to various world events and issues in South Africa. During the Isolation years of Apartheid in South Africa, the Currie Cup became extremely popular, with sold out stadiums putting to shame the crowds which gather for matches in current times.

Before Cricket South Africa moved to a franchise system for the competition in 2004/05, Transvaal, Western Province, and Natal dominated, winning 74 titles between them. Since changing to franchise participants with merged sides, Titans (Northern Transvaal) have been the most successful side with 5 wins, followed closely by Cape Cobras with 4 wins.
